Welcome
My name is Ariel Thebert-Wright, I am twenty-four years old and I am a teacher. Although I have always known that I have wanted to teach, it was not always an easy road to travel. Earlier on in my career as a high school student, I tutored a young girl who had been diagnosed with ADHD and who required weekly mental health appointments. This nine year old girl needed intensive work on reading fluency, vocabulary, and writing skills. I learned more from this (now) young woman during my summer with her about the independence of all students and the genuine positive encouragement that is necessary from an instructor to achieve improvement than I have learned throughout my career as a student of education. My senior year of high school I was given the opportunity to be a teacher extern for Latin, requiring me to teach Latin I for a semester in addition to lesson planning with my mentor teacher, grading test and other assignments, and entering grades into a grade book. This experience solidified that I would in fact be a teacher and from that point I was not going to give up no matter what difficulties I encountered. Building from the skills that I had acquired, I was given the opportunity to tutor Latin language students in their studies and prepare them for upcoming hurdles. These hurdles were tasks such as needing to move up a year in the language by the beginning of the next school year, preparation for International Baccalaureate courses, and intensive language study to ensure passing grades in Latin courses. I have been tutoring Latin language students for four summers since my graduation from high school in 2006. I am currently an English instructor at Western Michigan University teaching Composition 1000. This has been the most meaningful and important experience to me in understanding the art of instruction and delivery of information to students. I have also been employed at Bank of America as a professional bank teller for two and a half years. This requires me to have excellent customer service skills in addition to effective listening, and ensuring a professional response to conduct unbecoming. I believe that my experience through the bank will aid me well not only in my professionalism with administration and staff but more effectively with students acting inappropriately and the parents of students as well.
As a Latin language major I will be traveling to Rome, Italy for a study abroad experience in summer of 2012. Although my Italian language skills could be best defined as rudimentary, I am thrilled none the less for this upcoming adventure. I enjoy learning about other cultures, especially in relation to those with which I am more familiar. But perhaps, most importantly, one of the hobbies that I am most passionate about is cooking, more specifically baking. I always am working on perfecting my own recipes and expounding on others. I find the act in general to be therapeutic and calming.
In my spare time, I like to volunteer for social service organizations such as Susan G. Komen’s Relay for Life, March of Dimes, in addition to donating to my local food pantry. I enjoy community involvement and being part of the community in which I teach. I feel that if parents trust me with the education of their student, I have an obligation to enrich the community environment around me and develop meaningful relationships with members of that community. In high school, I was president (proconsul) of the Latin club which required developing club activities and events, t-shirt sales and designs, fundraising, and community outreach programs. I would love to be involved with language clubs, as well as writing oriented organization through the school such as a literary magazine or publication and poetry slams.
