We Learn by Teaching
The transmission of information is not a one way street; I have learned more from my students than I have ever learned from an instructor. I believe that each student deserves an equal opportunity to learn and apply information. It is critical to lead by example with examples, whether this applies to situations in or out of the classroom. All students should have an opportunity for differentiated learning in a differentiated classroom. As an instructor, I have the responsibility to relate course information and concepts to the lives of students (activate prior knowledge) to maximize impact, retention, and application of information. Students should also have the opportunity to demonstrate application of information acquired to real life situations and scenarios whenever possible. Teaching is important to me because I know I will be a life long learner and I will maintain my passion for learning. Students are often told what is correct with little, if any, explanation as to the significance of the information being presented or why this information is necessary. I plan my units and lessons around the question “why do I need to know this?” and each piece works together to prove that the information is important and useful in everyday life situations. I am passionate about learning and this enthusiasm is infectious to students and their aspirations. Each student that I have and have had is valued and I demonstrate that to them on a regular basis through conferences, editing and commenting on documents, and during class instruction. All in all, I want each student to believe that she or he has value and should pursue their passions as I have and continue to do. Thus far, my experiences have created a plethora on defining moments, each prove to be a strong additive in my teaching philosophy- we learn by teaching.
